Gray & Black

Gray & Black watercolor paints

Black and gray watercolor paints can easily flatten everything.

So these are not completely flat.

They shift slightly, lean warm or cool, and some of them granulate or break when you add water.

That gives you variation instead of a heavy, dead surface.

If you use them for shadows or depth, this becomes very obvious.

You will notice it when:

  • shadows feel layered instead of solid
  • the color has movement instead of just darkness
  • you can build depth without everything collapsing

That is what these are doing.
