Velvet Ultramarine Blue is a classic ultramarine, but with more depth and a smoother feel on paper. It’s strong, rich, giving you that satisfying ultramarine range from airy blue washes to deep, dark values.
In dilution it opens into a clear, cool blue with softness in the edges. When you add more pigment it becomes dense and powerful, and it stays blue even when you push it far. It also granulates in a way that looks natural and textured, especially on rough paper.
This is one of those “always useful” blues. It mixes beautifully with warm reds for deep violets, with yellows for natural greens, and it’s perfect for skies, shadows, sea tones, denim, and anything where you want a blue that doesn’t look flat.
If you paint a lot, this ends up being the blue you keep replacing when the pan runs out.
