Caput Mortuum is the color of dried roses, old bricks, and slightly dramatic life choices.

It’s a deep, muted red with a cool earthy undertone, so it never turns lipstick, cherry, or “look at me”. It stays grounded and moody, which makes it insanely useful. You can use it straight for shadows in florals and skin tones, or mix it into other colors when you want to make them calmer, darker, and more serious.

This is the pigment you reach for when you want a red that behaves like an adult. Strong, but not loud. Rich, but not flashy. And it has that quiet, slightly mysterious vibe where it makes a painting feel deeper without making a scene.

Also: it mixes beautifully. It can pull bright reds down into dusty wine tones, turn greens into proper forest shadows, and make neutrals that actually look like they belong in nature.

No fillers. No nonsense. Just good pigment and a binder that does its job.

Lightfastness: 6/6 (Excellent)
