The Difference Between Gouache and Watercolor
Share
If you’ve ever held a palette in one hand and a brush in the other, wondering, “Wait… aren’t these both just watercolor?”—you’re not alone. Gouache and watercolor are deeply connected, but they each bring something unique to your creative process.
Understanding the difference isn’t just about paint—it’s about choosing how you want to express yourself. So let’s slow down and explore both with curiosity. No pressure. No right answer. Just you, your art, and what feels good in your hands.
Transparency vs. opacity
The first (and clearest) difference is how they handle light.
- Watercolor is transparent—it lets the white of the paper shine through. This gives your work a soft, luminous feel.
- Gouache is opaque—it covers what’s underneath, like a soft matte veil.
Both are beautiful in their own way. It depends on whether you want to glow or cover.
Flow vs. shape
Watercolor is all about movement. It spreads, blooms, and flows. It often invites you to let go of control.
Gouache, on the other hand, gives you edges. It’s easier to build shapes, layer over mistakes, and create bold, defined forms.
If you love softness and surprises, watercolor might feel like a friend.
If you crave structure and confidence, gouache might feel like support.
The feel and finish
Both paints are water-based, especially the gouache I make by hand (not acrylic-based!). But they dry differently:
- Watercolor dries light and glowing
- Gouache dries matte and velvety
Some artists even combine both to get the best of both worlds—movement and clarity, softness and structure.
Use them together — They’re on the same team
Since they share the same base (and mine are both handmade and eco-friendly), you can mix and layer watercolor and gouache in one piece.
- Lay down a soft watercolor wash
- Add gouache highlights or bold shapes
- Or try a gouache background with watercolor detail on top
They’re not competitors. They’re companions.
