How to find your unique art style with watercolors
Share
Finding your art style isn’t something you force—it’s something you remember. It’s already inside you, waiting to emerge through color, rhythm, and curiosity. Watercolor, with its softness and unpredictability, is a beautiful companion on this journey. It doesn’t ask you to be perfect. It asks you to be honest.
But with so many influences and techniques out there, how do you find a style that feels truly your own? One that reflects who you are—without comparison, without pressure?
Let’s walk through it, gently.
Let Go of the Need to Define It Right Away
Art style is not something you decide in your head—it’s something that grows in your hands. So if you’re unsure of your style right now, that’s okay. Try to release the urge to define or label it too early.
Instead, ask yourself:
- What colors am I drawn to?
- What subjects feel natural to paint?
- What kinds of shapes, moods, or textures feel like me?
Allow yourself time to explore, to repeat, to play. Your voice will show up when it feels safe.
Pay Attention to What You Love (and What You Avoid)
Notice what makes you feel alive when you paint. Maybe it’s the way granulating blues settle into soft layers. Maybe it’s painting tiny florals or messy abstract washes.
At the same time, notice what you avoid. That’s information too. Sometimes it’s resistance—and sometimes it’s just not your language.
Keep a sketchbook or art journal and:
- Swatch your favorite handmade paints
- Paint the same subject in 3–4 different styles
- Reflect on what feels good in your body when you paint
- Your art style is an extension of your energy. The more you listen to yourself, the more it reveals itself.
Repetition Builds Recognition
Style becomes clearer through repetition—not through pressure. Try painting one subject over and over with tiny shifts: different palettes, looser brushwork, varied detail. Over time, you’ll begin to see patterns. You’ll hear yourself in the marks you make.
Style isn’t about standing out—it’s about feeling like home.
